Week 4 (Erina)

Time has flown by so fast! Because I want to focus more of my energy on the assignment due on Friday, I will keep this week’s post brief.

This week, I focused on searching for and reading up relevant articles related to my research topic. As I read various journal articles around the topic of online learning, I discovered the research by Dr. Randy Garrison was often referenced. Over the last two decades, this professor has developed the concept of community of inquiry introduced by John Dewey and has developed a framework that identifies important conditions needed for successful blended learning in higher education. I found this framework to be extremely useful in shaping and narrowing my research question. As a result, tweaking my research question a little bit, I want to look at how in-class semi-anonymous online platforms can help improve cohesiveness among students. I think I will be using Dr. Garrison’s work to frame my research work.

Also, after talking to our teacher today, I realized I had made the logical jump of assuming remote learning inhibited cohesiveness among students so I will have to find literature to back this assumption up. In addition, I will also have to define remote learning since there are so many different forms of this type of learning these days.

  1. Hi Erina, this sounds really interesting. I have always found that one of the difficult things with research is always that as the writer we know where our topic is going it is very easy to overlook jumos in logic. In my writing, I know that I sometimes will not explain a point correctly because it seems intuitive to me but may not be intuitive to the reader. I think that one of the advantages of this first assignment is that it is fairly condensed. This means that we have to really analyze each point and make sure that the study flows logically.

In terms of qualitative data, it seems important for validity and trustworthiness that making sure there are no logical jumps. I found that there were useful tips to organize data in the week four lecture such as colour coding data that will hopefully help making sure the study is fully coehesive.

  2. Yes I agree. I found this week's arguments really helped break down my research question. It also helped me understand what I should be reading in the coming weeks. I really liked the idea of color coding data but this seems to be a little more difficult when the data is saved in different files on my laptop.
